Construction and Building Information
The pub opened for business on February 9, 1897 by long time Vancouver publicans, Ron Slinger and Dave Raht. [| APU]

Original Use and History
Built in a turn-of-the-century craftsman–style design, it looks perfectly at home in this corner of North Vancouver, where trees are plentiful and glorious mountain views are everywhere. Warm and attractive on the outside, the Bear promises more of the same inside, and it delivers. High ceilings, rich woodwork, a large stone fireplace, and plenty of cozy seating areas invite customers to come in and make themselves at home.
Prior to building and opening the Black Bear, Slinger and Raht owned and operated the success Queens Cross Neighbourhood Pub from 1979 to 1996. In 1996 they decided to sell the Queens Cross and began to create the Black Bear. Sadly Raht passed away in 2006, but many of his ideas remain and Slinger is now the sole publican.

Since opening its door the Black Bear Neighbourhood Pub has enjoyed great local community support and has been the recipient of many local awards. Most notably, readers of the North Shore News have voted the Bear as their Favourite Pub on the North Shore for 15 consecutive years.
The Bear has also won the prize for the 'Best Pub" as voted by the readers of the North Shore Outlook.
For a small, independent pub, the Bear was awarded 'Runner Up' in the Georgia Straights annual "Golden Plate Awards" in the "Best Pubic Food" category by the readers of that publication. The bear sells great beverages.
